The
other day I received a text from a friend that began...You need to Google...’ In the year 2012 we can say this without giggling...I got to thinking...what if we had the
capability to go back in time. Imagine a conversation with someone who pulls out
a map to get directions...then they asked, ‘how do you get directions?’ Our
response, ‘Well, I googled it.” They would probably give us funny look that would say 'you did what?’
Today technology has exploded...my iphone
allows me to have face to face conversations with others who have iphones, get real time directions and weather. I have contact with people all over the world in the matter of
seconds. Now that I have utilized it I couldn’t imagine ever being without it. In fact
the psychological world has added a new phobia to the book, being afraid to be without your phone for an
undisclosed amount of time.
While technology can be a distraction at times there are many positives as well. Phones and Tablets give
access to every major bible translation in English and other languages. Technology also allows evangelists such as Billy Graham to impact the world like no time in
history...eventually when he dies his crusades will live on in places he was
never able to get to. But just like all new things people are afraid of
it...they think it is just one more step to having all our rights taken
away...people scream ‘mark of the beast. Just because it is new and doesn’t
come in the form of paper and leather doesn’t mean it is evil...
In the 1st century new
technology was introduced to the world...it came in the form of Jesus Christ. He
gave people unprecedented access to God. The
result was more people hearing about God for the first time and long after His
death and ascension to heaven He lives on in places He was never able to go.
Millions and millions of people who weren’t alive in the 1st century
have been saved by this new technology called 'God in the flesh.' But there were
some who were afraid of it. It was new and didn’t come in the form of their law
so they deemed it evil...they attributed it to Satan...Matthew 12:22-24: Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him...All the people were astonished and said, 'Could this be the Son of David?' But when the Pharisees heard this they said, 'It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.'
The tools God is giving
us to reach people is ever changing because the way people are reached is ever
changing. So we reach them, we teach them and over time I
believe we will all embrace the old and the new.
